Awkward was the best way to describe the situation.  There was Yoochun, tied to Changmin’s bed, his estranged wife clinging to him for dear life.  His four friends stood paralyzed, like deer caught in headlights.  Junsu suppressed a girlish scream; Jae clutched the ancient book to his chest, Yunho at his side.  Changmin aimed his pistol at Kahi, his hands shaking.  It was Yunho who spoke first; his soft voice breaking the silence.

“It’s very nice to meet you,” he said as he stepped closer to the bed.  “My name is Yunho.”

As he approached, his eyes caught something on the floor.  It was a knife.  He bent down and picked it up.

“Oh my God,” Junsu gasped; realizing the knife was meant for him.

Yunho put the dagger on Changmin’s dresser.

“That won’t be necessary, and neither is the gun.  Put it away Changmin.”

Changmin reluctantly lowered his weapon.  Putting the safety back on, he tucked the pistol back into his jacket.

“No one is going to get hurt.  We are going to settle this peacefully until a mutually satisfactory agreement is reached.”

Changmin and Junsu stared at Jae.

“I didn’t tell you guys, but Yunho is a hostage negotiator.”

Changmin looked at Yunho.

“You’re a cop?”

The gentle giant nodded his head.

“Why don’t you step away from Yoochun, miss, we should untie him.  He looks rather uncomfortable.”

Kahi stared at her husband; the porcelain prince nodding to her.  She let go of him and slithered off the bed.

“Jae, give Junsu the book.  You untie Yoochun.”

Yunho’s lover did as he asked, handing the antique book to a frightened Junsu.

The shop owner acknowledged Kahi’s presence with a deep bow; she was a princess after all, even if she was an insane princess.

“Prince Yoochun,” the shop keeper addressed the former doll, “you’re a lot of trouble.”

Yoochun blushed.

Jae undid the bonds, Yoochun rubbing his wrists where he had been tied.  He sat up in the bed; grabbing the sheets, he covered up his nakedness.

“Let’s talk,” Yunho began, he voice calm and steady.

Yunho made Junsu sit down; the businessman looking pale as if he was going to pass out.  Changmin got him a glass of water; Kahi’s dark eyes following his every motion.

Yunho began to pace across the room; not nervously, but lightly and relaxed; he was a true professional.

“Let’s go over the facts, shall we?”

Changmin leaned up against the door.  While he believed Yunho was in control, he still didn’t trust the princess.  He decided to block the exit from her.  The only other way out of the penthouse was through the balcony, and that way lead to death.

Yunho began his speech; all ears listening.

“Many years ago, Yoochun was a prince.  He was betrothed to a beautiful noble woman.”

Yunho bowed to Kahi, the former princess nodding back.

“While their marriage was an arranged one, the two grew to love each other.”

Yoochun glanced at Kahi, tears welling in his eyes.  He did love her; he loved her still; but he loved Junsu more.  He cursed himself for doing her wrong and bringing this tragedy upon them all.  He looked to Yunho for guidance; his was the voice of reason in this troubled sea of insanity; a storm brought about by Yoochun’s inability to remain faithful to his wife.

Yoochun spied the knife on the table.

“Kill yourself,” the blade spoke to him, “kill yourself and everyone will be free of you and your selfish heart.”

The prince turned to face his wife once more; lower lip trembling as he saw tears fall from her long lashes.

“Keep the faith,” he told himself, “always keep the faith.”

Yunho continued.

“Then one day, a handsome young man came to the court of the porcelain prince.”

Yunho turned and gestured toward Junsu.  All eyes were upon the hapless businessman.

“The prince and the courtier became good friends, but as time progressed, their friendship turned to love.  The prince was tormented; torn between his duty to his wife and his love for his friend.  On one sunny afternoon, the trust was broken; friends became lovers; marriage vows broken; the prince betrayed his princess.”

Junsu started to cry.

“Kill yourself,” Yoochun heard the voice in his head; “kill yourself.”

The porcelain prince rushed to the table and picked up the knife; gasps and shouts filling the room.

“Yoochun, what are you doing?”

The former doll pressed the blade to his chest, the point breaking his skin; a trickle of blood appearing at the tip.

“It can only be mended with blood,” he told them.  “I must die to set you free.  This is all my doing.  I must atone for my sins.”

The blade went deeper; Junsu dropping the book and screaming.

“I’m going to do it,” he gasped, blood running in rivulets down his pale skin; the blade mere inches from his beating heart.

“Chunnie, please stop.”

Yoochun looked up at Junsu, his lover trembling in fear.  They were all trembling.  Even Yunho who had thus far been a pillar of strength looked as if he was going to crumble.

The blade went deeper; more blood seeping from the wound.  A slow and agonizing death awaited the porcelain prince as his wrist twisted the knife; ignoring the pain, he was determined to end the curse by ending his own life.

“Yoochun, don’t do this,” Yunho pleaded with him.

The porcelain prince shut his ears.

A flick of his wrist; sharp, stabbing pain made him cry out.  Staggering backward he came closer to the balcony; Yunho blocked his way.

“Fuck you all,” he screamed; blood spurting; room spinning as he went to plunge the dagger home to its final destination; his heart; his selfish heart.

“He’s yours,” a voice shouted across the room.

All eyes were upon Kahi.

“Junsu is yours.  I renounce all claims to you Yoochun.  I am no longer yours.  I am not your wife.  I will go far away from this place and never come back.  Forget that I even exist.  Let me fade away into obscurity.  If you die, then we all suffer.  Let it end here and now; not in blood, but as Yunho said, a mutually satisfactory agreement.”

Yoochun looked in the direction of Kahi’s voice.  His vision was blurred; his body shaking.  He looked at the blade which protruded from his chest.  Reaching out into the air he fell to the floor, calling out for his true love.

“Junsu.”

Jae called an ambulance; Changmin running to the bathroom to get towels and the first aid kit.  Junsu held Yoochun’s hand as Yunho did his best to stop the bleeding.  The blade was in deep; but was it deep enough to be fatal?

“Should we pull it out?” Changmin asked.

“No,” wait for the medics.  They’ll know what to do.”

“Should we call the police?”

Yunho smirked.

“I am the police, remember?  Besides, they will probably come with the ambulance.”

Changmin smiled.

“What about her?”

They all looked at Kahi.

An idea formed in Yunho’s brain.

“Jae, take her to the shop.  Let her lay low for a few days.  I’ll clear up this mess.”

“You mean you’re going to lie?”

Yunho nodded his head.  It was ludicrous for a cop to conceal the truth, but he had no choice.

“What are you going to say?”

Yunho smiled.

“I’ll think of something.”

“Take the stairs,” Changmin advised them.

Kahi took one last look at Yoochun and followed Jae.

The ambulance and the police arrived moments later; the medics taking over and swiftly bringing Yoochun to the hospital, Junsu riding in the back, holding his Chunnie’s hand.

Yunho and Changmin remained behind; the cop flashing his badge, forging a wild tale of jealousy; Yoochun’s ex-girlfriend once more trying to kill him; the cop and the club owner unsuccessful in apprehending the insane woman.

As the excitement died down, Changmin left for the hospital. Yunho returned to the shop, bringing the ancient book with him.  The policeman would figure something out with Changmin’s help; the club owner was a genius after all.

Jae continued to read the book.  The more he delved into it, the more; it revealed its secrets.  The mystery behind the making of the dolls and how they made their way to his store was scribbled upon the pages.  There was still one unanswered question; why was Junsu not immortalized in porcelain?  How did his spirit travel the ages, and why was his body exactly the same as it was all those years ago?  It was Kahi that answered the question.

“Look,” she said, there’s a page missing.”

Indeed there was; a page had been torn from the book.  The next few days all three frantically searched the emporium for the missing page.  It was found in a ledger, dated 23 years ago.  Jae read the ledger entry.

“Purchased; one life sized porcelain doll.”

Jae gasped as he read the name.

“Junsu.”

“What? That’s impossible.  I’m not a doll!”

Jae handed him the torn page from the book.

“You were adopted, right?”

Junsu nodded.

“You once told me you had no memory of your childhood; that you had amnesia.”

Junsu looked at Changmin.

“I had an accident.  I hit my head and was in a coma.  When I woke up I didn’t remember anything.”

“You were a doll.  Your parents bought you.  Something woke you up and they didn’t know what to tell you.  They made up a story.”

Junsu shook his head.

“No.  I don’t believe it.”

Jae sighed.

“Something must have triggered your awakening.  Think about it.  They bought you 23 years ago.  You woke up, a fully grown man without a past.  They forged papers for you.  Your father is a lawyer, your grandfather a wealthy businessman.  Connections, Junsu; they have connections.  They must have paid everybody around you to keep their mouths shut.  All you memories were made up.  You’ve been living a lie.”

Junsu wept.

“What about us?  We’ve been friends for years?”

Changmin nodded.

“Yeah, a few years, but not since childhood. We met in college, remember?”

Junsu buried his face in his hands.

“I’m sorry Su.  I’m truly sorry.”

The four friends sat around Jae’s kitchen table drinking soju; they tried their best to console themselves.  Kahi was with them too; she had left her job and her apartment to stay with Jae and Yunho.  The only thing left was to figure out what to do with the former princess.  Changmin and Yunho had a plan; if it worked, their troubles would be at an end.

“Let’s go visit Yoochun in the hospital.  He could use some cheering up.”

Junsu shook his head.

“No.  I’ve got something to do.  I need to confront my parents.”

“Uh oh.”

Junsu left the shop; Mr. Ahn waiting for him in his limo.  They sped off to Junsu’s ancestral home.  His parents greeted him warmly, but Junsu jeered at them.  Without hesitation he confronted them and demanded an explanation.  What he learned was shocking.

“You see Junsu,” his mother explained, “we’ve always been in the toy business”

She handed him an ancient book.  It was the exact copy of the one in Jae’s shop.

“One of our ancestors made you.  We found the doll by accident and bought it.  The other two dolls weren’t at the shop when we found you.  They had been separated somehow.  It’s through fate that they were found and brought to the little store.  Who knows what would have happened if you had all been together at the same time.”

Junsu couldn’t believe his eyes and his ears.

“We read the story out loud one day and the next thing we knew, you had come to life.  We didn’t know what to do.  We made up things; told lies.  No one would believe us if we told them our doll came to life.  The family bound together and created a lifetime of memories for you.  We forged papers and credentials; that’s how much power we have.  It may have been wrong, but we did it for you Junsu.  We did it because we love you.”

His mother embraced him; visibly shaken, she sobbed into her son’s shoulder.  He held her tight, crying buckets along with her.  Even his father, the stoic attorney wept.  He had been living a lie; but it was all done for love.

Love.

His thoughts turned to Yoochun.

His kissed his mother.

“I forgive you all.  I love you both so very much.  I must go now, but I’ll be back.”

He ran out the door, his parents embracing each other.  Their dark secret was finally revealed.  As they watched their son speed off into the night, they breathed a sigh of relief.

Junsu arrived at the hospital.  All of the friends were there, including Kahi.  Junsu practically pounced on his lover, kissing him sweetly upon the lips.

“Everything is going to be fine,” he told his prince.

Yoochun smiled.

“Yes it is.  Yunho and Changmin have devised a plan.”

Junsu raised an eyebrow.

“Changmin has connections in the entertainment business.  He’s arranged for Kahi to audition.  If she’s as good as she says she is, she’ll be a star in no time.”

Junsu smiled.

“That’s good news.”

Yunho cleared his throat.

“Junsu, Kahi is leaving town.  I’ve found a place for her to stay while she’s in training.  Let’s give her a few minutes alone with Yoochun, ok?”

Junsu sighed.  They left the room; Kahi remaining behind with Yoochun.  It was an awkward situation.

“Will you be ok?” he asked her.

She nodded her head.

“I’ll be fine.  I’ll try and remember you after I become famous.”

He laughed, but soon winced in pain.  She laid her hand against his wound, his heart fluttering beneath her palm.

“I still love you,” he told her in his deep, raspy voice.

She smiled.

“I know.”

Leaning in to him, her mouth engulfed his; tongue sliding between his teeth; plunging deep and hard.  She released him from the kiss, leaving him breathless.

“Goodbye Yoochun.  Don’t worry about me.  I’ll find another man to love.  Maybe not someone like you, but that’s the way it is.  There are plenty of fish in the sea.”

She waved goodbye to him as she sauntered out of the room.  Turning her back to him she left the hospital, thanking Yunho and Changmin for all their help.  As she walked out on the street, her high heels clicked upon the pavement.

“Goodbye my porcelain prince,” she murmured.  “I shall always remember you.  A part of me will love you forever.”

Time heals all wounds.

Kahi debuted with an entertainment company and became famous.

Jae and Yunho’s little emporium continued to prosper.

Changmin’s club became one of the biggest hotspots in the city.

Junsu’s toy empire expanded; his business growing in leaps and bounds.

As the businessman dropped Yoochun off at The Pleasure Palace, the former doll waved goodbye to his lover; remaining at the door as Mr. Ahn sped away, carrying his precious cargo, his Junsu.

Yoochun made his way up to Changmin’s penthouse suite, practically skipping like a school boy.  He opened the door and ran to the bed; pouncing on a drowsy Changmin.

As he straddled the club owner, he whispered in a deep raspy voice.

“Changmin, let’s fuck.”
